Turf Wars Boss Challenge prizes review and more tips
Hello Dragon Ladies and Lords! In my previous post I have described the ongoing Boss Challenge event and general ideas to increase your chances of getting the best possible rewards. Today I will add a few more tips and review the prizes, so that if you haven't decided yet, how much effort (or gems) you are going to spend, you'll get a bit of my help. So, let's start!
Gemming in the event
As I have mentioned, even if you are willing to spend gems on this event, it is better to wait with it. There are many reasons to do so:
schedule for this week from official DML Facebook page |
- Gameloft hasn't announced a gem spending event for this week, however, a gold gathering event has been announced. The mini events (like gold/food gathering/spending and gem spending) usually occurs in pairs: one event for everyone, and one VIP-only. In schedules that had been published before, VIP-only events haven't been mentioned, so it's very likely some unannounced event will take place also this time. Usually a feeding event accompanies a gold gathering event, but a gem spending event isn't very unexpected though. Especially that I see many economical reasons for Gameloft to make it happen now.
- The further you go in the events, the harder the battles become. So it will be very likely later, that one of the element restriction set you'll get will be doable for you, but very hard. Training your dragons, and some battle fury essences may help you, but if you spend gems to refresh timers on those hard battles, you will be able to benefit from Striker or Gravelis power in all of them.
- Sometimes it's hard to predict how many gems you'll need, as you can be very lucky or very unlucky. If you underestimate how many gems you need to spend, you may fix this even in the few last minutes of the event, but if you overestimate it, you won't get your needlessly spent gems back.
So, I strongly recommend to keep all your gems at least for tomorrow. If the gem-spending event comes, you also shouldn't skip fights just after it starts - be patient and try to optimize. The only exception is for when skipping a short timer (like when you need 3 gems) would buy you additional full cooldown refresh (as I have described in my previous post).
Here's the table for refreshing costs of different timers in the event. Keep it in mind, so that you don't pay one extra gem for 5-10 seconds you could have just waited:
As you can see, if you are about to skip a few cooldowns in a row, it's better to skip full 2 hours (for example, skipping two 30 minutes cooldown would cost 10 gems, which is even more than for skipping 2 hour cooldown, and would only cause you gain 1 hour advance). But, let's look at different situation: you have 3 hours 40 minutes of free time, and then you will be unable to play for 5 hours. Without skipping, you will win one battle now, and one after that 5 hours, so you will progress by 2 battles. But, if you skip the 20 minutes cooldown for 4 gems, you'll win two battles now, and also one battle later, so it's one more fight for just 4 gems instead of 9.
If you have spent some gems during the technical problems that occurred at the beginning of event, send a ticket to Gameloft's costumer care. It seems that there will not be any collective compensation for this issue, but if you lost the games because of the Gameloft's mistake, you deserve to get them back. Send this tickets as soon as possible, so that all needed data are still on server when Costumer Care gets your message. If you did and got no answer, please contact me via contact form or leave a comment with any way to contact you, and I'll do my best to lean on them.
Prizes review
A very important question to be asked now is: are the prizes worth an effort of setting up a timer, making sure you have an Internet connection every 2 hours, changes in your battle team, et cetera, et cetera? Are they worth to spend gems? Let's see.
Each non-boss battle gives you small amount of food or gold (and it seems to be random). Boss battles gives you gems: 1 gem for 1st boss in the lap, 2 gems for 2nd boss in the lap, 3 gems for 3rd and 4 for 4th. So, each finished lap will give you 10 gems.
(Note: I haven't checked 3rd or any later lap and it doesn't seem anyone have gotten there yet, so this information isn't sure. However, if it's the same for the 1st and 2nd lap, I see no reason for further laps to be any different)
For a very active player, who sleeps 8 hours and can play at any time during day (like a freelancer working in home), it is possible to finish 5 laps without spending gems, so it is possible to get up to 50 gems from this event. This isn't so much, but remember this isn't the main prize.
You'll get the reward for each lap after defeating the final boss. The prizes are:
- 3 Dragon Fury Essences for finishing the 1st lap
- 20,000*Level Modifier gold for finishing the 2nd lap
- 2,000*Level Modifier food for finishing the 3rd lap
- Turf Dragon for finishing the 4th lap
- 10 dragon piece tickets for finishing the 5th lap
According to the DML Wiki, you can play any number of laps, and each lap after getting Turf will reward you with 10 dragon piece tickets. I am not sure about this information, as some players asked about it on official DML forum and there hasn't been any statement from Gameloft yet, but it worked this way last time we had Boss Challenge, and DML Wiki team is doing a great work, so I think we can trust them.
So, obviously the brand-new Turf Dragon is the main prize of this event, but I'll describe him in another section. Let's focus on other rewards now. 3 Dragon Fury Essences can be helpful in later laps when you get a hard element restriction, or saved for future use, for example in a castle event. I think they are worth your effort even if you don't have much time and don't love the Turf Dragon enough to care much about this event - 1st lap can be finished easily without much effort, with usual activity of a casual player, so don't give up this whole event, try at least to get the Essences.
Gold and food from this event are really average, considered the effort needed. Arcade and castle events give more of them for less effort. So if you aren't going for the 4th or 5th lap prize, don't put much of your effort in finishing 2nd or 3rd lap. Fight only when it's absolutely no problem for you and treat this event like a source of a few extra gems.
10 dragon piece tickets are actually an interesting prize. Let's assume you'll skip all the fights in a lap 5th (or further): it will cost you effectively 15*9 - 10 = 125 gems (10 gems you'll get back from bosses). This is actually awesome prize, as the regular prize of 10 dragon piece tickets is 225 gems. Especially if there will be gem spending event (and it will count as spending 135 gems). Assuming that Wiki is right about 6+ laps, you can complete 4th lap without gemming and there will be a gem spending event as I predict, you will be able to buy 20 dragon piece tickets spending effectively 200 gems (you'll have to spend 270 gems, you'll get 20 gems from bosses and 50 gems from event milestone). 25 less than regular prize for only 10 tickets - isn't it great? As a bonus, you'll also get small amount of gold and food, and few extra gems from leaderboard (depending on your group).
(Remember that this is a calculation assuming you won't need to refresh element restrictions - but for anyone with a divine as a main battle dragon shouldn't have a problem. Remember also you'll need to have an active VIP status to participate in gem spending event if one comes - at least at the moment you tap "Participate", if your status expires during the event don't worry, you'll still participate it and get all the rewards).
Especially that card packs has got higher value since the weekly dragon pieces has been introduced. Previously, they meant anything only to beginner player, who hasn't collected all the regular card dragons yet. Now we also have rotating pieces and assiduous gathering of dragon piece tickets may grant you for example Realm or Apocalypse Dragon. Not to mention that prizes from previous castle events sometimes return as a weekly dragon pieces - like it happened with Painted, Medalist and Taiyi Zhenren (!). So, having many saved dragon piece tickets could even have resulted in getting a divine dragon the week that Taiyi showed up. Even a person who started playing after the Divine New Year event technically could have obtained him, one of the best battle dragons in the game! I don't know if he will ever return this way again, but I really hope for Princess to show up. So, if you have some spare gems that you are willing to spend on some dragon, spending them in this event instead may be a wise choice: you can save your tickets as long as you wish and spend them whenever a dragon you want shows up. Don't spend all your gems this way, as it may happen that a dragon you want comes for example as a prize in Dragon's Delight, where tickets can't help you, but if you have many, many spare gems, spending 200-400 this time seems a good idea, as it may result in saving a couple of hundreds ;)
Turf Dragon
Last but not least, the prize for 4th lap: the Turf Dragon egg. As this post is already pretty long, and I keep describing dragons for three months, so I have explained many aspects in details, let me be more concise this time.
As a battle dragon, Turf doesn't seem really great, having only 61 points of base attack damage. However, his health point are rather high, and a dragon with defensive elements such as water and earth will never have high base attack damage. So, for a person who is balancing their team for the case of castle events and boss challenges, Turf may be a good idea, covering two rather unpopular among typical battle dragons elements and having triple element strengths from light attack, that may compensate low base by 150% modifier in many cases. Water and earth strengths don't intersect with light's, making Turf able to perform a strong attack against 5 different elements. This is especially important in Enchantment League, where lack of earth's or water's on-hit effect skill doesn't matter. Turf can't benefit from any uncommon Damage Boost potion, but I find it minor inconvenience, since common ones are usually enough to one-shot a dragon of the same level if you can perform a strong attack. In normal battles, Turf can play a defensive role really nicely with his skill set. Having water as base element is OK - Turf will take extra damage from shadow attacks, that aren't common in dungeon/campaign map fights, and from earth attacks, that don't have an on-hit effect. Obviously, he isn't a legendary, but only a very active player can build really balanced and strong primary and secondary team of 6 legendaries, and Turf in my opinion can actually be a good epic fill for a team lacking defensive elements.
Another nice usage for the Turf Dragon is leveling up temples. As I have mentioned many times, there are just a few non-limited time tri-elemental dragons with light element, so having any extra dragon like this, especially for a new player, may mean some saved food. Turf Dragon can live in a light habitat, so although his base 510 gold/hour can't compete with Stardust's 800, having him even just for his cuteness definitely isn't bad for the financial condition of your Dragonlandia. I don't see any usage for him as a parent though, a tri-elemental would be too unpredictable in the breeding den, and any exception from this rule (DotW, DotM, enchanted breeding) doesn't apply to him.
The Turf Dragon isn't a must-have. He shares his element set with the Fossil Dragon, that is available through enchanted breeding. Turf is a better battle dragon, as he isn't vulnerable to light and wind attacks, but on the other hand, enchanted Fossil is needed to breed the Crumbly Dragon, so if you want to complete your Dragon Codex, you'll have to enchant Fossil one day. So, if you are about to use one of them in your team, the decision is up to you - take your activity into consideration, as Turf may perform a bit better, but taking Fossil into your team may mean some saved enchantment materials. In terms of gold generation and leveling up temples, there is no difference between them.
I am absolutely in love with the Turf Dragon and I'm definitely going to get him, though I'll probably have to spend some gems for him (as I have spend far too much in travel, without Internet connection, recently). I can't decide if I want to have him adult or babify him, both forms are so cute and pretty! I really hope we'll get another chance to obtain him <3
Please tell me in comments what do you think about the Turf Dragon and other prized of the current Boss Challenge. I keep my fingers crossed for all my readers' luck when getting element restriction sets and I hope you'll have a wonderful day at your Dragonlandia! :)
