Weekly Dragon Pieces review: the Realm Dragon

Hello Dragon Ladies and Lords! As a new week has started, the Painted Dragon has been replaced by the Realm Dragon in Weekly Dragon Pieces. This text will provide you with general information about Realm obtaining an potential usages to help you decide whether you should spend your clan coins or even dragon piece tickets or gems this week. So, let's start!

Obtaining

Realm's egg
There is a chance of obtaining Realm pieces when opening any card packs this week. This includes a free card that you get for completing your daily mission, a free card that you can get for watching an ad video twice a day, card packs bought for clan coins and card packs bought by gems (or dragon piece tickets). The chance of getting a Realm's piece hasn't been revealed by Gameloft, but basing on my own experience of opening over 60 cards, I have estimated this chance as 1,5%. To get the Realm Dragon, you need 30 pieces, which means, that you would need to spend an average of about 1,500,000 clan coins or the equivalent of about 32,000 gems in dragon piece tickets. It's not that this is just a lot, those numbers sound super crazy! But like always, there is also a bright side: Realm Dragon is one of the regular weekly dragon piece dragons, which means that he will probably return in a month or two and even if you can't complete it now, the pieces that you get won't go to waste, you will just need to wait patiently for another opportunity to get Realm. However, is this dragon worth its price? Let's have a look.

Note: all numbers above are calculated from 60 cards, which is quite small as for a statistic sample, so treat them with distance. 1,5% seems to be best estimation, but it's possible to be any number between 0% and 5%. Remember that even if it's a really good estimation on the average cost, it's still just an average and you may need more or less resources spent, depending on your luck.

Realm compared to other dragons

Realm's element set isn't unique and there are two other legendaries that share it: the Crystal Dragon and the Crumbly Dragon. None of them is limited-time. Crystal  is a breedable dragon that has got a chance of being obtained when breeding Emperor with Magnet, which is quite a fortunate combination, even though long breeding times of miss-breeds, because there are no uncommon bi-elemental hybrids of neither light nor shadow elements (which are Emperor's elements), thus all mis-breeds from trying to breed Crystal would be common or epic, and there is only one epic you can get from it: the Stardust Dragon. Stardust is actually one of the dragons worth having duplicated because of its awesome potential of generating gold. Crumbly is available through Enchanted Breeding of Fossil and Frosty that both have to be enchanted to level 4. Both Fossil and Frosty are really nice epics and can be used as late-mid-game battle dragons, or fill late-game secondary team to cover missing elements for the case of castle events, so the enchantment materials spent on them wouldn't go to waste after the breeding. Frosty and Fossil are also dragons available through enchanted breeding, and to breed them both you will need Yeti, Lightfish and Brick Dragons enchanted to level 3 or higher and the Frostbite Dragon enchanted to level 2 or higher. Frostbite is another good epic to use and Lightfish and Yeti are nice ideas for a battle dragons for early-mid-game players (around level 40), for they both have four element strengths and as only commons, they are easy to enchant. So, Realm will have really hard time competing with those two legendaries: obtaining them aren't easy, like for any legendary dragon, but when you work on getting them, meanwhile you get other benefits (like the Stardust Dragon who is great gold producer, or enchanted nice epic that you can use for fights) that helps you progressing the game. Trying to obtain the Realm Dragon can only result for you in getting regular card dragons, which is also nice if you miss any of them, but if you have already collected all regular card dragons that you wanted, the best what you can do with new ones is hatching and selling them for little amount of gold and experience or points in Crowded Nursery events. There is one more advantage of Crumbly and Crystal over Realm - the Realm Dragon isn't part of any Codex collection, while the other two dragons are, so having them may provide you with some extra gems if you have the rest of  the dragons in their collections.

As a battle dragon

File:Realm Dragon Base Stats - Codex Entry (Three Elements).jpg
Realm is a legendary dragon, which means it can be a good battle dragon even for a very advanced and active player. Having the same elements, Crystal, Crumbly and Realm all have the same base stats. Their base attack of 73 isn't great, as legendaries have their base attacks between 71 and 81. On the other hand, their base of 262 health points is one of the highest among all the legendaries. This isn't perfect deal, as the power of dragon's abilities scales with its attack strength, not health points, but in my opinion, it is compensated by the skills. The light element provides you with area damage with the triple element strength, so in many cases those dragons would effectively do more damage than for example Plushie (who has 81 base attack) with a fire skill. The earth element provides you with a shield which is very useful when you have to play more defensively (for example in the dungeon, or castle event element restricted battles, where you only have one or two dragons that you can bring). Another great thing is that earth attacks are strong against water dragons, which isn't one of the light element's element strengths, so despite the fact that the earth attacks don't have any on-hit effect, it can be useful sometimes, for example if you are about to defeat water dragon, but light attack is slightly too weak. It's also extra help on Enchanted Arena, where skills don't matter, and gives those three dragons some advantage over, for example, Fairy Dragon (who has light and wind elements). So, Realm in my opinion can be very nice dragon for your team, if you are active enough to play with legendary dragons. And so are Crystal and Crumbly. The only difference between Realm and those two is the element order: Realm gets the earth element first while Crystal (and Crumbly) get the light element first. Since the light element provides you the triple element strengths, this seems a little disadvantage of Realm, as in the interlude between unlocking 2nd and 3rd element, it will have poorer battle potential. On the other hand, if you are considering a legendary dragon into your main team, your battle dragons are probably above level 30, so it shouldn't matter much. The element order matters also for enchantment elements needed for a dragon, and so, the Realm Dragon will need more earth elements, but less light elements. Therefore, if you have more light than earth dragons in your team, Realm seems a slightly better pick.

Other usages

As a legendary dragon, Realm Dragon would work like a wild card for the breeding, so most likely you will never use it as a parent - it would be too unpredictable for normal breeding, not count properly in any Dragon of the Month combination, as a not-normally breedable it's not likely it will ever be a parent for enchanted breeding, and the only case ever when a legendary dragon was a parent for the Dragon of the Week was during two divine events as divine dragons were Dragons of the Week, but in both cases, the required parent was current Dragon of the Month and I see no reason for it to ever change to a card dragon.

For generating gold, legendary dragons aren't the best pick, because the gold capacity of legendary and divine habitats is lower than of void, light and shadow habitats. However, if you play very often, this isn't such a big disadvantage, as you collect your gold often. The bigger problem is that you can only put two dragons in a legendary or divine habitat, so for every two legendary dragons you have, you could have three epics. Realm Dragon (as well as Crystal and Crumbly) has base of 860 gold/hour, which is quite an average as for a legendary dragon (though its more than Stardust's 800). Nothing to get excited about, but nothing to complain about either.

As the awakening of legendary dragon's 3rd element costs you 99 gems, you will not want to awaken Realm's light element unless you have a plan to use it as a battle dragon. Therefore, he will not be the help upgrading your light temple. However, if you don't feel you are active enough to have both your primary and secondary team legendary dragons, or if you are using mostly divine dragons and plan to have only one or two legendaries fed, you will need to feed some extra legendaries to upgrade your legendary temple. In this case, having the Realm Dragon may help you even if you have Crystal (or Crumbly) as well - if you have fed enough dragons to upgrade your light temple, but miss some with earth element, having the Realm Dragon may save you some food, especially that only other three legendary dragons that have earth as 2nd element (Cosmos, Stache and Skeleton) are limited-time.

Getting the Realm Dragon can be extremely hard, and I can't imagine anyone but very advanced players who have been saving clan coins, gems or dragon piece tickets for a long time to get it without spending huge amounts of real money. There are two non-limited-time dragons that can easily replace him for almost any use, and obtaining them seems to be better idea. On the other hand, in certain cases Realm could be slightly better idea for the reason of easier enchanting or upgrading a temple. For the players who don't have much card dragons yet trying to get Realm can be a good idea, since most of clan coins spent on card packs this week will result in regular card dragons anyhow, and if you are lucky to get the Realm Dragon as well, when you want to have legendary with light and earth elements, it will save you a lot of effort to breed Crystal or Crumbly. Another case when you can give it a try is when you just have more clan coins that you need. Just like me, I have all the regular card dragons (hatched or in  the inventory), as well as Kitty and Gargoyle and I earn more clan coins that I spend on clan dragon power, and though I don't need Realm for any usage, I keep on trying to get it, because I think it is so beautiful <3 I have a dream of the Realm Dragon living in one habitat with the Princess Dragon, near to the Regal Dragon, Pharaoh Dragon, Imperial Dragon and a shadow habitat with the Snow Queen Dragon, the Empress Dragon and the Emperor Dragon - wouldn't it be a lovely royal family?

Please tell me in comments what do you think about the Realm Dragon and which is your favorite - Realm, Crystal or Crumbly? Have a wonderful day at your Dragonlandia! :)
